MRCP Part 1 2026: New Exam Format, Preparation and Study Strategy

If you are planning to sit MRCP UK Course Part 1, 2026 has brought one significant change. The question format has not changed, but how the exam is delivered has. Here is what you need to know and how to prepare.

What Has Changed

Until recently, many candidates sat Part 1 at home under remote online proctoring. From the September 2026 sitting (2026/03), the exam is delivered in an examination centre. Candidates in Myanmar and Sudan are the exception and continue to sit online. Fees also rose with that sitting, to £520 for UK candidates and £696 for international candidates.

The Exam FormatThe exam content and structure remain familiar:

  • Two papers, each lasting three hours

  • 100 questions per paper, 200 in total

  • Best-of-five single-answer questions, with four plausible distractors

  • One mark per correct answer and no negative marking

  • Computer-based delivery at a test centre
